He served as treasurer of Western Reserve College, now Case Western Reserve University, when the institution was located at Hudson, Ohio. He was also a founder as well as a trustee of Lake Erie College. In 1850, then returned to Painesville where he continued in business until his death. He was also deacon in the Congregational Church for many years.
