Mary (Hinnuagsnun, One Woman) Gale was the daughter of Dr. John Gale and Ni-co-mi of the Iowa tribe.

Mary was part Caucasian and part Otoe/Omaha/Iowa Indian. Her Indian name was "Wa-Tun-Na", meaning "The One Woman." After her father's death Mary was raised by frontier trader Peter Sarpy, for whom Sarpy County, Nebraska was named.
