Eugene W. Ladenburger, 83, died Monday, June 21, 2010 at his home in Rapid City. He was born August 14, 1926 in Howard, SD to William and Florence (Esser) Ladenburger. Eugene was raised in Howard, graduating from St Agatha High School in 1944. He joined the United States Navy in 1945. After returning to Howard, he apprenticed as a butcher, thus beginning his lifelong career in the grocery business. Gene married Shirley Yunginger in Howard, SD on October 9, 1950. Gene worked in numerous grocery stores throughout South Dakota. He moved the family to Rapid City in 1966. After trying retirement three times, he finally retired at the age of 70. He was a member of many civic organizations throughout his lifetime, including Blessed Sacrament Catholic Parish. He and Shirley enthusiastically followed their children and eventually their grandchildren through their many activities and events. Gene also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include his wife, Shirley, a daughter, Jeanne Galbraith, six sons; Daniel Ladenburger (Sylvia), Michael Ladenburger (Nancy), Craig Ladenburger (Alma), Scott Ladenburger, Christopher Ladenburger (Michele) and Douglas Ladenburger (Lisa), eighteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A visitation will be held Thursday, June 24, 2010, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Edstrom and Rooks Funeral Services, Serenity Springs Chapel of Tranquility followed at 7:00 pm with a Christian Wake Service. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 10:30 am, Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Fr. Andrzej Wyrostek presiding. Interment will be in the Black Hills National Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the John T. Vucurevich Cancer Center and to Hospice of the Hills.
