Jacob Saunders

Jacob Saunders (1802-1876), son of John Sa(u)nders Jr. and Ann Cothan, grandson of John Sanders Sr. and Elizabeth Hancock, born in Fluvanna County, Virginia, died in Gallia County, Ohio. In 1824 he married Elizabeth Strong (1808-1864), daughter of John and Mary Strong. Both John Saunders and John Strong were Revolutionary War soldiers at Yorktown when Cornwallis surrendered. Jacob and his family, and brother, William and Jesse, who married Elizabeth's sisters, Sarah and Nancy, and their families migrated to Lawrence County in 1835 where they established the community of Saundersville. Jacob, and later his son John, was storekeeper and postmaster. After Elizabeth's death from smallpox in 1864, he married Elisa McCan. The 16 children of his first marriage were: John, Mary, Martha, Rebecca, Lucinda, Stephen, Pricilla, Jacob III, Isaac, Jesse, a Civil War casualty, Susanne, David, Sarah, Jacob J., Missouri, and America. The six children of his second marriage were: Dora, Winnie, James, Virginia, Noah, and Iva.
