FORMER BISHOP OF LEAMINGTON DIES

Nathaniel Ashby, 72, former Bishop of the Leamington Ward; died Wednesday night of a lingering illness at the family residence in Springville. He was born in Holden, September 20, 1874, a son of William Hardin and Nancy Marie Ashby. He married Jean Amanda Johnson, Nov. 27, 1901 in the Manti Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

They made their home in Leamington where he engaged in farming until 1944 when the family moved to Springville. He was Bishop of Leamington Ward seven years and also served as a member of the high council, ward teacher, stake Sunday school aid, stake MIA counselor and stake missionary. He filled a mission for the LDS church in the Northwestern States.

Survivors include his widow and seven sons and daughters, Mrs. Lola Thompson, Los Angeles; Evan Ashby, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Alpha Nielson, Lynndyl; Roland Ashby, San Pedro, California; Mrs. Vera Watts and Mrs. Julia Cherrington, Springville; Lt. Ralph Ashby, Army Air Forces stationed in Japan; 22 grandchildren, six brothers and sisters; Mrs. Nina Wood; Mrs. Emma Stephenson; Mrs. Mary Edith Stephensen,; Mrs. Martha Stevens all of Holden; Rodney Ashby, Manti and Robert L. Ashby, American Fork.

Funeral services weer held Sunday in Springville, burial was in the Evergreen cemetery. Some of the people who
attended the funeral were Bishop Jay Nielson of Leamington who spoke, Spencer Nielson, Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Finlinson, and Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Finlinson, Sr. all of Leamington; Joseph Finlinson, Jr. of Chicago; Bishop and Mrs. Clead Nielson, Mr. and Mrs. Lile Johnson, Lynndyl; Mr. and Mrs. Lester Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Johnson of Sutherland and Carl and Orran Ashby of Delta.

After his marriage to Jean Amanda Johnson of Holden, they lived in Leamington before coming to Springville in 1942. He died in 1947.

His children are Mrs. Don (Vera) Watts, Mrs. Bert (Julia) Cherrington, Mrs. Roy (Lola) Thompson, Mrs. Roy (Alpha) Nielson and Evan W. Ashby.
