Suggested edit: Hi again - I've continued to try to figure this out, and I found two things that seem to have a bearing on the question. First, there is a "Letta Hess" (born 1876 in Nevada) with son "Clyde Hess" in the household of Lawrence Barnard (Lettie's brother, per the 1880 census) in 1910. Letta is shown as married two years, working as a cook in the household, but her husband is not listed in the household. I think this is Lettie Barnard, with her son James Clyde Walker (same age as "Clyde Hess").

In the CA death index, there is no Letitia or Lettie/Letty Walker up through 1939. However, I found a Lettie M Hess who died in Tehama County on November 10, 1910. I'm about 95 sure this is the same woman, although I have no idea why she apparently was buried under the name of Walker - maybe because she had children with that surname.

LETTIE MAY BARNARD born Austin, Nevada Jan 20, 1876 died Corning Nov 6,
1910 married (-) Hess

Suggested edit: This is the same person. She was married to a Walker. They actually divorced. Then she married a Hess. She went to San Francisco. She end up with TB (Consumption) and she died from TB. I believe that her children were raised by other people, but end up having a relationship with their dad (Walker).
