APPLEMAN, Henry, South Fork -- aged 87 years, one of the oldest residents of this section and a pioneer settler of Bedford County, died last evening at 7:40 o'clock in the Memorial Hospital at Johnstown, following an operation for hernia which was performed yesterday morning. Mr. Appleman had been enjoying excellent health despite his age until Sunday, when he was taken suddenly ill. His condition became so serious yesterday that he was removed to the hospital for an operation. He failed to rally after the ordeal. Henry Appleman was a son of John and Mary Appleman, both deceased, and was born March 3, 1844, in Bedford County. He spent his entire life there until 1906 when he removed to South Fork to make his home. The deceased rode on the old Portage Canal on a number of occasions and also rode on the Portage Railroad when passengers were transported on flat cars. He was identified with the Methodist Episcopal Church at Defiance, Bedford County, where he had resided for many years before coming to South Fork. His wife, Mary Jane Appleman passed away 18 years ago. Surviving are four children: Mrs. R. M. Ott, a matron at the Memorial Hospital Nurses' Home; Mrs. William Fox, of South Fork; Mrs. George Stuckey, of Bedford, and Eherman Appleman, of Pittsburg. He was a brother of Scott Appleman, of Iowa, and also is survived by 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren. The body has been prepared for burial by George Bros., of this place, and has been removed to the Appleman home here. funeral arrangements have not been completed, but interment will be in the South Fork Cemetery. (Photo)
