Stefan was born in Nizna, Czechoslovakia, what is now Slovakia. He came to the U.S. on the S.S. Kroonland December 30, 1920. He petitioned for citizenship March 31, 1934. He was first married to a Veronica Kochan in June 2, 1924 in Luzerne, Pennsylvania. January 6, 1931 he was married to Mary Patrikar at Rosebush, Michigan. In Pennsylvania he was a miner and in Michigan he worked at the Dow Chemical Plant and on the highways for the WPA.
