Hayden John Black, age 93, of Miami, Fla., formerly of New Bethlehem, died early Saturday morning, Oct. 18, 2003, in Miami.

Born Sept. 26, 1909, in Pittsburgh, he was one of six children born to Herbert and Margaret Shimmon Black. He was raised in Willoughby, Ohio, and New Bethlehem. Mr. Black declined a full engineering scholarship to support the family, working at the Baltimore Locomotive Works in the grip of the Great Depression. He served with the Railway Mail Service and Office of Wartime Price Administration. In 1946, he became a CPA in Washington, D.C., and joined the accounting firm of Price Waterhouse. He became an IRS special agent, investigating underworld figures in Havana and New York at the height of Mafia power. Mr. Black founded the World of Reptiles, Inc., in 1961, supplying snakes and reptiles to zoos and laboratories. He was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Black was married to Katherine D. Shanks of Baltimore, Md. She preceded him in death.

Surviving are his three children: Marilyn P. Nimmo, Col. Richard H. Black (Ret) of the Virginia House of Delegates, and Constance M. Fast; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and a dear friend, Jane Pugh.

Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Rupert Funeral Home in New Bethlehem. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Ryver, pastor of the Grace Baptist Church in New Bethlehem, officiating.

Interment will follow in the New Bethlehem Cemetery
