James H. Houser, 78, of West Chester, passed away on Saturday, June 19, 2010, after a long battle with prostate cancer.

He was the beloved husband of Sara (nee Graybill) Houser, with whom he shared 54 years of marriage.

Born in Milroy, Pa., to the late Josiah Lester and Adeleene Treaster Houser, he was raised in Lewistown and Middleburg.

He graduated from Dickinson College in 1953 and received his master's degree in industrial administration from Carnegie Tech (Carnegie Mellon University) in 1959 after serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Karin from 1953 to 1956.

Mr. Houser began his career with Koppers in 1959 and joined Pennwalt (Elf Atochem) in 1963 where he served as president of the fluorochemicals division in Philadelphia from 1981 until he retired in 1992.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of West Chester and Whitford Country Club of Exton.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Houser is survived by his children, James Howell Houser Jr. and his wife, Paige, of New Fairfield, Conn., Patricia Houser Mahaffey of West Chester, and David Bruce Houser and his wife, Kandy, of Glenview, Ill. He is also survived by his brother, Stanley Paul Houser of York; sisters, Marguerite Jacobs of Shippensburg and Ellen Campbell and her husband, Robert, of Chambersburg; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Charles Houser and Josiah Lester (Jack) Houser Jr.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 25, at First Presbyterian Church, 130 W. Miner St., West Chester, PA 19382.

Visitation begins at 10 a.m.

Interment will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 26, in Paxtonville Cemetery in Paxtonville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1615 West Chester Pike, Suite 102, West Chester, PA 19382; or to First Presbyterian Church of West Chester at the above address.
