Mertie was the daughter of John Atkinson (1825) and Lucelia Morse (1829). She married Francis S. Brown on March 9, 1881 at Cazenovia, NY. They were the parents of 4 children: Clarence, Mildred, Wilhelmina, and Willard..

The Sac Sun - Thursday , August 5th, 1943 - Funeral services for Mrs FS Brown were held in the Neal Funeral home at Monday afternoon. Pall bearers were WH Smeeton, Clyde Highland, and four of Mrs Browns grandsons: Clyde Brown of Spencer, Clarence Brown Jr, Gaylord Stadlman of Sac City, and Paul Stadlman, Camp Butner, NC. Burial was made in Oakland Cemetery.

The following obituary was read at the services. Mertie E Atkinson was born Sept 4, 1857 at Cazenovia, NY and passed away hat her home in Sac City on July 30, 1943 at 12:25 pm at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 26 days.

She was one of a family of 5 children born to Mr and Mrs John Atkinson. Her parents, one sister, and her brother preceded her in death, the brother preceding her by only 3 days at the age of 90 years.

On March 9th 1881 she was united in marriage to Francis S Brown in Cazenovia, NY where they resided 11 years. In 1893 they came west where they settled on a farm near Schaller. In 1896 they moved to a farm north of Sac City where they resided for about 30 years. Since that time have made their home in Sac City.

Four children were born to this union, all of whom survive to mourn the loss of a kind father. They are namely: Clarence C Brown of Webb, IA; Mildred A (Mrs Harry S Allen); Wilhelmina (Mrs WJ Stadlman) and Willard Brown, all of Sac City. There are also 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; and 12 sisters: Florence Atkinson of Syracuse, NY and Mrs EF Depuy of Cazenovia, NY.

Mrs Brown suffered a stroke a little over a year ago on July 12, 1942 and has been bedfast ever since. She was always a kind and loving wife an mother. During her illness she enjoyed the many beautiful plants and bouquets set to her by her many friends.
