Born July 10, 1918, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Plyler and Mary Strong Cornwell. Mr. Cornwell was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Company B in World War II. He was an elder of New Hope Habitat of the Apostolic Faith in Valdese.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Cornwell; former wife, Sarah Cornwell; four brothers, Lamon Cornwell, Frederick Cornwell, Fred Lee Cornwell and James Cornwell. Survivors include sons, Benjamin (Virginia) Cornwell Jr. of Iron Station and Anderson Cornwell of Hickory; daughters, Sarah Lopes, Ruth (Emanuel) Witherspoon and Pastor Emma Doughty, all of Hickory; special stepgrandson, Gary Wood of Maiden; 16 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 2010, at New Hope Habitat of the Apostolic Faith, with Dr. Bishop W.C. Miller officiating. Burial will be in Southside Cemetery.
The family will be at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday. The family extends special thanks to Hospice nurse Jean Rowe and to Adult Life. Dirk M. Thompson Mortuary is serving the family of Benjamin Louis Cornwell Sr.
