Paul Ahlfinger was a sailor on board the USS KANAWHA (a Fleet oiler) during WWII. On 7 April 1943 the USS KANAWHA was anchored in Tulagi Harbour in the British Solomon Islands. The hulking oiler was attacked by Japanese aircraft and took several direct hits. CAPT Brainerd Bock, USN ordered his sailors to abandon ship, and although many survived, 19 sailors, including young WT2 Paul Ahlfinger, lost their lives. The USS KANAWHA sank in the wee hours the following morning on April 8, 1943.
