Alvin Jayne attended North Vernon public schools and later studied bookkeeping. He was bookkeeper for the McKeehan Hotel, on Kentucky Avenue in Indianapolis, managed by his aunt Margaret McKeehan, and the family lived in the hotel for a short time after they first went to Indianapolis. He bought a feed store on the west side of Indianapolis, which he operated until the time of his retirement in the 1920's. He added groceries in the later years, operating as a neighborhood store.
