Ellen Sheffield Barson is another who lies in an unmarked grave along the trail. She and her husband, Samuel Barson, joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Wellingbourough, England. When they decided to come to Utah, Ellen's parents, Peter Sheffield and wife, who were also converts, came with them. They sailed from England in the ship Windermere in February 1854. Ellen was weakened with the rough voyage, poor food and lack of water. When cholera broke out among the company, she became an easy victim. The company reached St. Louis, Missouri, where they were put in quarantine, and a few days later Ellen died. She was buried somewhere near the island on which they had been quarantined.
