Anna Mae was engaged to be married. She was stoking the fire at home one day. She broke a piece of wood over her knee. The knee was badly bruised and became infected. At last gangrene set in. The doctor, who, some say, had a habit of drinking heavily and that day was in no condition to be performing surgery, said the leg would have to be amputated. Anna's father insisted that she not go to a hospital. He wanted the surgery performed at home. Anna lost her leg and became critically ill.

As Francis Wilson Gilkey lay dying on February 27, 1893 the older brothers, Rollie and Frank, carried Anna Mae in to see her daddy for the last time.

"Don't worry, Daddy, I'll be joining you before long," she said. And so it was...43 days later, she joined her father and the younger siblings who had passed on.

It was later said that the surgery need never have been performed.

She was engaged to George Greer, of the family for whom Greersburg Acadamy in Darlington, PA was named. He later married her cousin, Margaret Shannon. They are also buried here at Rocky Spring.
