Ruby Mims Dawson died on Tuesday, June 15, 2010.
Mrs. Ruby Mims Dawson, beloved wife of the late Lewis L. Dawson, devoted mother of Daniel Lewis Dawson and daughter-in-law Cynthia of Fort Valley, Virginia; Susan Dawson Natoli and son-in-law Lee of Woodstock, Virginia; grandmother to Jonathan E. Dawson along with six great-grandchildren; and devoted daughter of the late Orace Alpha Mims and E. Alice Mims went to join her husband and family in Heaven.
Mrs. Dawson was preceded in death by her brother Thomas Mims and her sister-in-law Lucy; Eloise Taranto and brother-in-law Emanuel and Inez Childress and her brother-in-law Frank.
She leaves a loving brother Robert Mims and his wife Joanne of Moncure, North Carolina and a dear sister-in-law Billie Hamilton and brother-in-law Bobby of Cary, North Carolina. She is also survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews as well as special friends Joyce Brown, Jim and Marlene Livengood and the late Wayne Miller.
Mrs. Dawson served as the bookkeeper for the family business, Dawson's Mobil Gas, from 1955 to 1977. She then worked for the Department of the Army until her retirement in 1988. She made many lasting friendships with the people with whom she worked and received over 100 Christmas cards each year, many of them from past co-workers. Her interests included gardening, being especially known in her Woodstock neighborhood for her flavorful tomatoes. Mrs. Dawson was a proud cook and baker and loved preparing meals for her family, often sharing with neighbors.
Christmas was a special time to prepare cookies and pies surprising every guest with something made especially for them to take home. Mrs. Dawson and her husband, Lewis, were charter members of Greenbrier Baptist Church in Arlington, Virginia where they were active from the beginning of the church in the early 1950's after settling in the area, both being born and raised in North Carolina and after Lewis' service in the Navy.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at Greenbrier Baptist Church, 5401 South 7th Road, Arlington, Virginia. She will be laid to rest beside her husband, Lewis at Columbia Gardens Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
The family will receive friends at Murphy's Funeral Home, Arlington, Virginia from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 22, 2010.
