Married to Celestia Tinker Porter. Son of William Porter and Sarah Custard Porter. He and Celestia had two children, History of Crawford County,Pennsylvania, Warner, Beers & Co., 1895, Biography of William Porter. The 1880 census lists their two children as Juvenelia Porter and Walter G. Porter.

Former Mayor John Porter, 76 years old, died last night in City Hospital, Meadville. He was for many years a prominent hardware man.

At Meadville last night John Porter, aged 74 years, one of the best known men in the hardware business in western Pennsylvania, died after an illness of one day's duration.

The deceased was born in Fairfield township, this county, and early in life became identified with the Porter Hardware company of Meadville.

He was twice married. His first wife was Miss Tinker, sister of Mrs. J. O. Hull, the celebrated vocalist. His second wife was Miss Flavia Davis, who survives him with a daughter, Miss Juvia Porter.
