Benjamin Poole was appointed a Cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1826, and graduated 10th in the Class of 1830 as a Second Lieutenant in the 3d Artillery Brigade. He was stationed at Fort Sullivan in his home state of Maine in 1830‑1832, then worked as an Army surveyor until 1836 when he followed his regiment to Florida: he fought in at least one battle of the Second Seminole War, and participated in the removal to the West of the Cherokee Indians. He died in the 1839 yellow fever epidemic at St. Augustine.
