He was born on December 5, 1928, in Charlottesville, the son of the late Lynwood Leonard Sr. and Claire Meoni Coiner of Gordonsville.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Phyllis Downer Coiner; three children, Lynwood L. Coiner III and his wife, Melinda, of Midlothian, Virginia, Robert K. Coiner and his wife, Jacqueline, and Anne Coiner Jones, both of Gordonsville; six grandchildren, David Coiner and his wife, Lauren, of Richmond, Matthew Coiner and his wife, Stephanie, of Charleston, South Carolina, Lauren Coiner of Hilo, Hawaii, Lindsay Coiner of Charlottesville, Jim Jones and his fiancee, Samantha Warren, of Alexandria, and Allison Jones of Leesburg; and one great-grandson, Reese Coiner of Charleston, South Carolina.
He is also survived by two sisters, Joyce C. Herndon of Gordonsville and Ann C. Nygaard and her husband, Darrell, of Culpeper; and several nieces and nephews.
Woody grew up in Gordonsville and graduated from Fork Union Military Academy. After attending the University of Virginia, he went into business with his father at Coiner's Hatchery in Gordonsville. In 1964, he bought the local Ford dealership and operated Coiner Ford until he retired in the mid 1980's. Woody was a past president and charter member of the Gordonsville Lions Club, past president of the Northern Virginia Firemen's Association, former scout leader and little league baseball coach. He was recently honored for his 60 years of service as a member of the Gordonsville Fire Company where he served as Chief for 23 years.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19, 2010, at Preddy's Funeral Home in Gordonsville, Virginia, with interment at Maplewood Cemetery. Pastor Deborah Koontz will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, June 18, 2010.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Gordonsville Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 297, Gordonsville, VA 22942 or the Gordonsville United Methodist Church, P.O. 466, Gordonsville, VA 22942.
