WAS FULL OF YEARS.

DEATH OF A WELL KNOWN PIONEER.

STEPHEN O'BRIEN, ONE OF THE EARLIEST SETTLERS IN THE GRAND RIVER VALLEY, DIED LAST NIGHT--HIS MEMORABLE CAREER.

STEPHEN O'BRIEN died at 10:45 o'clock last evening at the residence of his daughter, MRS. C.G. PULCHER, 78 Clinton street. He has been confined to his bed for several weeks and the end was not unexpected. All the members of the family were gathered around the bedside at the final moment, and the Rev. Father James C. Pulcher was also present. The end came quietly and peacefully, and it was in perfect harmony with the life the old gentleman led.

Stephen O'Brien was one of the early pioneers of this city, and he was the second white man to build a log cabin add [and] settle upon the west side of the river. He was born in County Louthe, Ireland, on December 23, 1814, and came to New York in 1833. He lived there two years and after spending two years in St. Joseph, this state, he came to Grand Rapids in 1836. With his brother, BERNARD, he bought a tract of land from the government, a few days after his arrival and for fifty-eight years the old O'Brien homestead in Walker township has been one of the most familiar landmarks. Soon after building his cabin Mr. O'Brien started to find a short route to this city, the only road then in existence being the old river road. He "blazed" a course through the woods and afterward chopped out a road and it is even now known as the O'Brien road. A hard working farmer, he was a successful one and he was one of the believers in a bright future for the village. He became interested in several business enterprises, and among his early associates were H.H. Ives and E.U. Knapp, and the three of them built the old Phoenix block on Lyon street.

Honest and earnest in all his undertakings, his acquaintance was wide and he was greatly respected by all who knew him. He held several township offices at various times, and in the early 60's was nominated for state senator, and, although the Democrats were not as numerous then as now, he had the satisfaction of giving his opponent a lively chase and running away ahead of his ticket.

His wife died just fifteen years ago, almost upon the same day as his death, leaving thirteen children, six of whom are now living, and they were all at the bedside last evening. They are BERNARD M., ANDREW P., P.H. and THOMAS F. O'BRIEN, and MRS. C.G. PULCHER and MRS. P.V. MEHEN. The funeral will be held from St. James church, the day to be announced later.

All the members of the family were gathered around the bedside at the final moment, and the Rev. Father James C. Pulcher was also present. Toward the close of 1836 a number of Irish families, flying from oppression and evil laws, sought a home in Michigan. Among the number who settled in Kent county at that period were PATRICK O'BRIEN, James Murray and STEPHEN O'BRIEN.

STEPHEN O'BRIEN was a native of County Lowth, Ireland. He came to the United States in 1835, accompanied by his brother, BERNARD; spent one year in New York, then came to Michigan and lived one year at St. Joseph; and in 1837 he pre-empted eighty acres in each of the three sections--28, 29, and 32--in Walker township. For some years the brothers worked together as partners. Meantime, their father and mother came from Ireland to Michigan and the father improved one of the tracts mentioned until his death, at the age of ninety-one years. Stephen O'Brien accumulated a farm of 240 acres, which was heavily timbered with oak, beech, maple, and black walnut, yet he succeeded in having it all cleared and devoted it to general farming. But he lost everything in 1873, including his farm. He died April 13, 1894.

STEPHEN O'BRIEN married JANE PAYTON in February, 1845. She was born in county Roscommon, Ireland, and came to America a young woman; four years prior to marriage she came from Canada to Grand Rapids with the WILLIAMS family, by whom she was employed as a domestic. Mr. O'Brien had a farm of 240 acres, which was heavily timbered with oak, beech, maple and black walnut, yet he succeeded in having it all cleared and devoted it to general farming. But he lost his all in 1873, including his farm. He lost his wife March 19, 1879, and his own death took place April 13, 1894. There were born to his marriage thirteen children, of whom six only reached maturity, viz: MARY JANE, wife of C.G. PULCHER, of No. 78 Clinton street, Grand Rapids; THERESA, wife of P.V. MEHEN, telegraph operator, and residing at No. 94 Charles street, same city; BERNARD M., the subject of this sketch; ANDREW, on the grandfather's old place, on which the first improvements were made; PATRICK H. and THOMAS F., of the firm of O'BRIEN BROS. funeral directors in Grand Rapids.

FARM IN FAMILY FOR NEARLY EIGHTY YEARS

INTERESTING HISTORY IS RECALLED BY SALE OF THE O'BRIEN PROPERTY.

TAKEN UP IN THE YEAR 1877 [1837]

The announcement that the livestock, farm implements and hay and grain of the O'BRIEN FARM on Butterworth Road are to be sold at public auction recalls some interesting facts in regard to the farm.

It was purchased from the government in 1837 and originally consisted of a section or 640 acres. The original owner was STEPHEN O'BRIEN, father of B.M., T.F., and the late P.H. O'BRIEN, and he was already established on the farm at the time the state of Michigan was admitted into the Union. The road leading to the place, which now is a continuation of Butterworth avenue, S.W., still is called the O'BRIEN ROAD for it was blazed and cut through by the sturdy pioneer.

The first house to be put up on the place was a log cabin and this was followed by a modest frame house. Later, as prosperity came, a fine house was erected, but this burned eighteen years ago. Another house was built on the site and this one is still standing.

STEPHAN O'BRIEN lived on the homestead until the time of his death in 1893 and the farm has been in possession of his family for seventy-seven years. Last September 280 acres of it were sold to Dr. A.J. Patterson who will take possession April 1. A part of the original tract is still owned by A.P. O'BRIEN.

PASSED AWAY.

STEVEN O'BRIEN DIED LAST NIGHT AT THE AGE OF 80 YEARS.

STEVEN O'BRIEN, mentioned in yesterday's PRESS as being dangerously ill, died at the residence of C.G. PULCHER, his son-in-law, at 10:45 last night. All the members of the family were gathered around the bedside at the final moment, and the Rev. Father James C. Pulcher was also present. The old man died as he had lived, happy and at peace with all the world.

Steven O'Brien was born in County Louth, Ireland, in 1814, and came to this city fifty-seven years ago, when but 24 years of age. With his brother BARNEY he bought a tract of land from the government a few days after his arrival, and for fifty-seven years the old O'Brien homestead in Walker township has been one of the most familiar landmarks. Soon after building his cabin Mr. O'Brien started to find a short route to this city, the only road then in existence being the old river road. He "blazed" a course through the woods and afterward chopped out a road, and it is even now known as the O'BRIEN ROAD. A hard-working farmer, he was a successful one, and he was one of the believers in a bright future for the village. He became interested in several business enterprises, and among his early associates were H.H. Ives and E.U. Knapp, and the three of them built the old Phoenix block on Lyon street.

His wife died just fifteen years ago, leaving thirteen children, six of whom are now living, and they were all at the bedside last evening. The are BERNARD M., ANDREW P., P.H., and THOMAS F. O'BRIEN, and MRS. C.G. PULCHER and MRS. P.V. MEHEN.

The funeral will be held from the residence of his brother, 78 Clinton street, Monday, at 9:30 a.m. and St. James' church at 10 a.m.

Later in the same year Mr. White was joined by Jesse Smith and a Frenchmnan named John J. Nardin, who came and settled in the, township. The following persons followed to complete, the early settlement: Henry Helmka, Wm. W. Anderson, Joseph Denton, John Hogadone,, Harvey Monroe, John Harrington, PATRICK O'BRIEN, STEPHEN O'BRIEN, Jas. Murray and the Edison family. Many others followed at an early day.

O'BRIEN.
