John was born shortly after his parents moved to Iowa from Ohio. At some time in the 1860's it is thought that John went to Idaho with his older brother David, who had been there since 1862. In 1875 he eloped with Hester, the young daughter of a neighbor, Confederate Capt. John Bowman. She died of 'quick consumption' later that year.

John went back to Iowa to marry Vina Lawson in the fall of 1877, and they then made their home in Idaho until around 1883, when they purchased land in Iowa. In 1887 they moved to the San Luis Valley of Colorado and homesteaded in the Bowen community south of Monte Vista, near where Vina's parents had moved the year before. They remained here until moving in with daughter Rachel in Hillrose, CO in the summer of 1917.
