Winnfield, La., Nov. 22. -- Robert E. [sic F.] Machen, proprietor of a restaurant here, is dead as the result of a pistol duel here last night. According to the only eyewitness to the tragedy, Ben Francis, James S. Carter, prominent merchant, was the other participant in the fatal affray.

According to Francis, he was standing in the doorway of Carter's store chatting with the merchant when Machen approached. On seeing Carter, Machen, according to the witness, drew a revolver and with an oath fired two shots at Carter, neither of which took effect.

Carter ran into the store and dodged behind a showcase, Machen following. Francis says Carter began firing over the top of the showcase at Machen, who dropped to the floor with two bullets in his body, one striking his head and the other lodging in his breast. Machen died within five minutes and was unable to make a statement.

According to reports here, the tragedy was provoked by domestic troubles. No charge was filed against Carter. The coronor has summoned a jury to conduct an inquest this morning.

Machen was married. Carter is not married.

Gravesite Details

Both the 1880 Winn Parish census (enumerated in June) and the 1900 census show that Robert was born Dec 1879. His grave marker erroneously gives the date Dec. 3, 1880.
