Elsie Susan Green was born May 28, 1894 in Boulder, Colo., the daughter of Lester E. Green and Carrie Clarke Green. She passed-to-rest in the blessed hope of our Lord on January 2, 1986, at Lutheran Hospital, in Wheatridge, Colo.
Shortly after Elsie's birth, the Green family moved back home to the family farm in North Loup, Nebraska...making the trip by covered wagon. The Green family were members of the North Loup Seventh Day Baptist Church and were active in its ministries. Elsie met and fell in love with Guy Henry Thorngate, also of North Loup. They were married in the North Loup Church on March 16, 1916. For several years Elsie and Guy farmed in Nebraska, where their first child, Mary, was born.
In 1922, they moved to Denver, where Guy became an officer for the Denver Police Department. He retired in 1951 with some 25 years service to the department. While in Denver, the Thorngate home was blessed by two more children: Gordon and Geraldine "Gerry."
Guy and Elsie were charter members of the Denver Seventh Day Baptist Church which was organized in 1928. They were both faithful and active supporters throughout their lives. As Treasurer, Guy was instrumental in the purchase of the first church building for the congregation at 40 Kalamath Street in Denver.
A strong Christian Sabbathkeeping family, the Thorngates were core members and much church life centered around their family and in their home. The children have many fond memories of those years. Elsie not only loved to cook, she always had the dining room table set in a special way for the Sabbath and other special events.
Guy Thorngate died on Dec. 6, 1951, and Elsie remained a widow for several years. On April 9, 1964, she was married to Edwin Henry Burdick, who had lost his wife, Alice, the previous year. Elsie had known Ed practically all her life. Their friendship went back to days in North Loup. They had over 21 happy retirement years together.
Elsie's place in the Denver SDB Church will always be special. As a charter member and active for 57 years, she was truly a Mother in Zion. For years she was a member of the Blanche Sutton Sabbath School class, taught in the Vacation Bible School, was a member of the Ladies Aid and served in many other roles. The Lord has used her life to bless us all. She was a Deaconess of the church -- truly a Shepherdess - a responsibility she took seriously. Even late in life when limited by what she could do, she was still a Deaconess; interested in and supportive of, the members of this congregation. She was special to this Pastor and always had a joke or some banter to share whenever I called. Elsie was an original, a true character. She had a zest for life that inspired all who knew her. We shall never forgt her quick wit and spunky determination. The younger generation would say, Elsie had 'class.' Her clothin was always coordinated and hair styled.
Elsie was preceded in death by her first husband, Guy Thornate, who died in 1951 and her second husband, Edwin Burdick, who died just one week ago; one sister and four brothers. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Wolfkiel and Gerry Van Dyke; one son, Gordon Thorngate; 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one stepson, Edwin Burdick, 3 step-grandchildren and 5 step-great gradnchildren; and a host of friends.
