James was born in Culpeper County, Virginia. He was the son of Nathaniel Warden and Mary/Molly Tillett. James married Jemima Thorp Dec.1,1807. They are the parents of five boys, Tillett, Thomas, Talton, Tilson, and Tilman, and three girls, Rosanna, Mourning, and Nancy.
In 1794 when James was ten years of age, his father Nathan Warden moved the family to Kentucky, they traveled north to avoid the mountains up to Pittsburg, Pensylvania then accross to the Ohio River and then by flat-boat down the Ohio River and landing where Maysville, Kentucky now stands. From there they traveled south into Madison County, Kentucky.
