Barthelme was an advertising executive, an entrepreneur, and a writer who published 3 novels and countless shorter works.
He asked for little and gave much.
Born in Houston in 1939 where he remained until he escaped the "Rat Race" in 1996 by moving to Seadrift TX to pursue redfish, whooping cranes, and holes in one.
He wanted to be known as a kind and got his greatest joy from making a convenience store clerk smile.
He succeeded more often than not.
Preceded in death by his parents Donald Barthelme and Helen Bechtold and brother Donald Barthelme
He is survived by his wife Pat Rodgers and children Christy Barthelme Blackburn and husband Garth, Susan Barthelme Bierschwale and husband Glenn, and Peter Barthelme and wife D'Ann, stepson James Gaile II, grandchildren Addison and Bailey Blackburn, sister Joan Bugbee and brothers Fredrick Barthelme and Steven Barthelme.
Barthelme was cremated and now resides at the prettiest place he ever saw in San Antonio Bay.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Friends of Aransas Matagorda Island.
