Confederate Soldier
State : North Carolina
Regiment : 38th
Company : G

He was raised in the Quaker church, but in March 1863 he had not yet formally joined the church, so when he was conscripted, he went and served his time and received an Honorable Discharge.

After returning home, he joined the Holly Spring Friends Meeting in Randolph County, NC. When the recruiters came by after he had joined the church they attempted to conscript him again, they disregarded his discharge and attempted to conscript him again and he paid a $500 "Exemption Tax".

Later the recruiters came by yet again and disregarded both his discharge as well as his exemption and conscripted him for the 2nd time. Having now formally joined the church, he refused to fight and was arrested and taken to Richmond and imprisoned. He was only given Cane seed meal and quickly became ill and was taken to the hospital where he died.
