Double Funeral of 102-Year-Old Soldier and His Wife at Sugden Thursday
Mrs Em Owens pioneer settler of Jefferson county, died Tuesday February 23, at the family home in Sugden to be followed by her husband Harvey Owens, a veteran of the Civil war on the Union side, on Thursday morning, February 28. A double funeral was conducted at the Sugden cemetery Thursday afternoon at 4:00 by Rev Lyle Smith, pastor of the First Christian Church of Waurika. Harvey Owens was born in Polk county Arkansas, May 14, 1828 and would have been 103 years of age had he lived until his next birthday. Mrs Owens was born in Alabama February 23, 1848 and passed away on her 83rd birthday. The couple had resided in the Chickasaw Nation part of Oklahoma for the forty years. Mr Owen enlisted in Company A of the third regiment of Arkansas cavalry at the opening of the war between the state and served to the end of the war with four years and five months of service to his credit The couple had lived in Sugden for the past 11 years. No children were born to the union of Mr and Mrs Owens but both have surviving children by former marriages. Mr Owen ta survived by three sons: A J Owen of Loco, A Owen of Oklahoma City and three daughters; Mrs Nancy Frasier of Comanche, Mrs Lisa Masters of Hail Center, Texas and Mrs Mattie Looper of Lakeston, Texas.
Mrs Owens surviving children are: A Thompson of El Reno, Mrs Francis Shaw of Shamrock, Texas, Mrs Dallie Drury of Sugden and Mrs Pearl Owens of Snomac, Oklahoma. Both Mr and Mrs Owens were life long members of the Christian Church at the time of going to press. Thursday afternoon an effort was being made to get a company of soldiers from Fort Sill to conduct a military funeral for Mr Owens.
