SPRINGFIELD - Ralph Edward "Eddie" Gerstung, 59, of Springfield passed away peacefully after a long illness on June 11, 2010, at the VA Medical Center, North Chicago, IL, surrounded by family and hospital staff members that he was proud to call his friends.

He was born on November 29, 1950, in Bellefonte, PA, the son of Ralph C. Gerstung and Gayle L. Gerstung.

He spent his life as a self-employed contractor specializing in outdoor decks. His hobbies included woodworking, fishing, camping and biking. Most of all, he was proud to have served with the United States Army in Vietnam during 1968-1970. He had a passion for all things military.

He is survived by his son, Dillon Edward Gerstung of Lafayette, IN; four brothers, James (Rita) of Springfield, Loran (Jackie) of Pennsylvania, Tim (Misha) Provo of California and Robert (Karen) of Springfield; seven sisters, Sue (the late David) Dominguez of Johnsburg, Delree (Bill) Clark of Ingleside, Deborah (Roy) Hoffmann of McHenry, Selma Eckard of Chicago, Connie (Steve) Coy of Colorado, Karen Center of Springfield and Liz (Tony) McCulley of North Carolina; 28 nieces and nephews; and 31 great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, David Dominguez.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 15, 2010, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel, Springfield, IL. A graveside service will follow at 12 p.m. at Camp Butler National Cemetery. Military honors will be by the Sangamon Co. Interveterens Burial Detail.

Memorials may be made in his name to the Disabled American Veterans, Cincinnati, OH
