He graduated from Fairbury High School and served in the US Army Air Core in WWII. He served as a volunteer fireman in Fairbury for before he was married. After the war he graduated from Fairbury Junior College . He was married to Marialyse Hagar in Fairbury , Nebraska on May 31, 1947. He was a member of the Episcopal Church, the Platte Valley Masonic Lodge 32 AF and AM, and the Tehama Temple of the Shrine of Hastings, Nebraska, York Rite Bodies and was Past Master of the Blue Lodge of Sutherland , Nebraska . He was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. During the Vietnam War, John served frequently as a member of the color guard for military funerals at Fort McPherson .
John moved his family to North Platte in 1949, and began a 42-year career with the Union Pacific Railroad. He served in the Railroad Battalion of the National Guard for many years. He enjoyed painting with acrylics, fishing, hunting, carpentry work, and following Husker Football. He built and remodeled numerous houses in North Platte , but particularly enjoyed building toys and holiday decorations for his children and grandchildren. He is survived by Marialyse, his wife of 63 years, two brothers, Harold and Leland and one sister, Doris KnobelTurner, as well as three daughters, Jane (Mrs. Richard Flower of Salt Lake City, UT), Diann (Mrs. David Fairey of Las Vegas, NV), Mary Lou (Mrs. Jon Altig of North Platte) and two sons and their spouses, Bryan and Marcia Knobel of Vancouver, WA and Tom and Shelley Knobel of Spring, TX. He leaves eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Daryl and James and sister Gertrude Rowlands, as well as his son Mark and Mark's wife Josephine.
