Ruth M. Ballengee Cobb

HINTON — Ruth M. Ballengee Cobb, age 86, of 100 Ewart St., Hinton, passed from this life into the glories of heaven on Saturday, March 27, 2010, at her home surrounded by her family. She fought a courageous battle with cancer assisted by Hospice of Southern West Virginia and several faithful caregivers.

Born April 12, 1923, in Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Erma Ballengee.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Edward L. Cobb. One brother, Paul Ballengee, Jr. Sister, Mary Carol Badgett. Grandson, Brandon, and a grandson by marriage, Tom Wagner.

Ruth was a devoted wife, homemaker and mother. She loved to read, garden, feed the birds, cook and attend church. She enjoyed talking with neighbors and friends and had a joyous, contagious laugh. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Hinton.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Barbara Hatfield and husband Joe of Hurricane, W.Va. Two sons, Ronald Cobb and wife Doris of Hinton and Thomas Cobb and wife Janice of Ocala, Fla. Three sisters, Eleanor Peters and husband Kenneth of Winston Salem, N.C., Nita Sims and husband Dick of Alderson, W.Va., and Lee Corker and husband Bill of Lewisburg, W.Va.

She was blessed with six grandchildren: David Hatfield and wife Melanie of Monroe, N.C., Beth Wagner of Hurricane, W.Va., Dale Hatfield and wife Michelle of Scott Depot, W.Va., Scott Cobb of Alderson, W.Va., and Chase Cobb and wife Stacy of Ocala, Fla.

She delighted in her nine great-grandchildren: Ashley McMillan and husband Josh, Zack Hatfield and wife Sarah, Andrew, Stephen, Drake, Dylan and Ian Hatfield, Nick Wagner and Dakota Cobb.

She was also blessed to be a great-great-grandmother when Natalie Rose Hatfield arrived last year.

The family extends heartfelt appreciation to the caregivers who assisted Ruth during her illness, Judy Barnett, Becky Howery, Marilyn Gunter and Bernice Hartwell, and her neighbors, friends and church family for their love and support during the last three months.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, March 30, 2010, at First Baptist Church in Hinton with Rev. Jeff Canterbury and Rev. Ronald Cobb officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens in Hinton.

Friends may visit with the family from 12 noon until 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, at the church.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons.
