Lowell Edison ("Ed") Autery, 18, of Downing, died Wednesday afternoon (June 4, 1980) at the Poe Used Car Lot in Downing. Mr. Autery was working under a car when it fell off the jack and crushed his chest.
He was born September 27, 1961 in Pittsfield, Ill. In 1977 he moved to Lancaster to the home of James and Evelyn Lewis, who were his foster parents until he was 18 years of age. He was a 1979 graduate of the Schuyler R-1 High School at Lancaster. In September 1979 he enrolled in the Quincy, Ill. Technical School, taking courses in Auto Mechanics. In December 1979 he enlisted in the National Guard and had just completed his boot camp training. For the past year he had made his home with Vernon O. Cassady family in Downing.
Besides his foster families, he is survived by his mother, Aileen Autery of Burnside, Ill.; his father Lowell Edison Autery of the LaBelle Manor Nursing Home, LaBelle; one brother, David Rex Autery of Quincy, Ill.; one half-sister, Rosemary Stewart of Quincy, Ill., and three half-brothers, Gene Ray Autery who is serving with the United States Army in Germany; B.M. 2 Donald L. Autery, who is stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii with the United States Navy, and Jack Autery of Quincy, Ill.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon (June 7, 1980) in the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster. The Rev. Francis Shepherd of Quincy, Ill. conducted the services. Burial was in the Downing Cemetery, with military rites at the graveside.
Bearers were members of the National Guard Unit from Quincy, Ill.
