Stephen was paroled from the camp on 14/15 May 1865 and mustered out as a private in Davenport, Iowa on 8 Jul 1865. The family has a collection of letters (in his native German) that he wrote back to Iowa during his service and while held prisoner. His physical description from his discharge papers is five feet, 10 inches, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair.
After he and Elska married they farmed on their property; the south half of the NE quarter of Section 16, German Township, in Grundy County. The farm would be at the southwest intersection of roads T13 and D17 today. It was sold 25 Apr 1884 for $3,100 to Priebke Priebkes. This property was likely a bounty grant for Stephen's Civil War service.
In 1885 the family moved to Kossuth County. They bought the homestead of John Reed, who was a comrade of Stephen's during the war years. It was located near Burt and they spent the remainder of their days at that place.
