KNIGHT, Naomi (Kirkman)

TOGETHER FOREVER

Naomi Kirkman Knight passed away peacefully in her home on May 12, 2006 with family present. she was born to Kathryn and L.G. Kirkman on December 23, 1919 in
Twin Falls, Idaho.

It was there in fifth grade that a shy boy named Theron put a huge valentine on her desk at school. While they were just friends during their school years and beyond, 18 years later they fell in love and married. She graduated from high school in Twin Falls. She then worked in Twin Falls and Los Angeles to support her widowed mother and help her sisters get an education. As members of the Church ofJesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she and Theron Knight married in the Logan, Utah temple for time and all eternity on March 16, 1949. They spent their early married years in Chicago, Denver and Mountain Home,Idaho while Theron finished his medical degree and spent time in the service. They settled in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho from 1953-1958 and then moved to Spokane Valley. She was very supportive of the long hours her busy husband spent as a family physician helping people. He died suddenly in 1984. It has been 22 years since they last hugged. What a joyous reunion they are having!

Naomi wanted a short obituary, as she doesn't like being in the spotlight. But her children and grandchildren wanted to share more about her wonderful example! She actively volunteered at Broadway, North Pines and University High. While her four children were young she was room mother and PTA officer many times over. She received the Acorn Award from NPJH for outstanding service. She was a fun, patient Cub Scout and Bluebird leader.

Many admired her yard and especially her beautiful rock garden. She was seen mowing the grass, planting flowers (especially red geraniums) and snow blowing into her 82nd year. She was blessed with a keen intellect and felt learning during our time here on earth was vital. She made good use of the library and often had a book reserved that she was waiting to read. She shared her love of reading, bright intellect and her great sense of humor. She was proficient at genealogy research and organized many notebooks filled with family history.

Naomi often remembered to count her blessings and counseled others to do the same. Knowing a family that prays together, stays together, she gathered her family for prayer daily. She was known for her strength of character. In 1979
she spoke to a group of women about aging. She said, "When youth and beauty are fleeing down the corridors of life we are left with our bare dispositions exposed. There is nothing so beautiful as cheerfulness and serenity in an old face. Add to that an interesting conversationalist and an interested listener and you've really got something!" Those who knew her would testify that she practiced what she preached!

Naomi was an example of efficiency, organization and frugality. Naomi would wash and dry sandwich baggies and carefully scrape off the margarine wrapper. She loved to quote the maxim: "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without." She also believed that "if you get something out, put it back where it belongs and you will always be able to find it."

After her husband's death she bravely served a mission to the Philippines in 1986 for the LDS church. Among other accomplishments she was the Mission Recorder and Travel Coordinator. She wrote the words to the mission song. She developed a very professional newsletter and formed the first year book of the mission. Throughout her life she happily served her church in many capacities. Freely giving service to the church and to others was always an important part of her life as she followed the example of Jesus Christ.

She so enjoyed and appreciated the multitudes that have recently called, visited and sent cards and letters and flowers. During the last month of her life she said, "This has really been fun, just so glorious to see so many people." Thank you for giving her that gift.

She is survived by four children who love her dearly: Bonnie (James) Martin of Corvallis, Oregon, Martha Jan) VandeMerwe of Cincinnati, Ohio,Roger (Laurie) Knight of Sasche, Texas, and Carl (Pam) Knight of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. She is also survived by two amazing sisters; 17 fabulous grandchildren and six-and-one-half darling great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at the HAZEN & JAEGER FUNERAL HOME, N. 1306 PINES RD., SPOKANE VALLEY, WA on Monday,May 15, 2006 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 40th and Bowdish.
