As a young man, John joined his elder brother Luke Moore working on the railroad in Columbus. He boarded at the home of Gabriel Egger, another railway employee, and soon married Gabriel's lovely daughter Rose. To this his father-in-law could hardly object, as Gabriel had married his own landlord's lovely daughter Josephine twenty-eight years earlier.
Over a period of twelve years they had six daughters, three of whom died young.
John was a member of St. Dominic's parish, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and the Holy Name Society.
