Son of Caleb Shamblen and Matilda 'Dolly' Slaughter. Husband of Aseneth Wickham Shamblen, married about 1844, of which 6 children were born; Phebe, Eliza, Nancy, Thomas, Emmaretta & George. After his first wife's death, Fred married Susannah Bates, 2 Feb 1856, of which 7 children were born; Rhoda, Caleb, Anna, Clara, Mary, Sarah & Jessie.

In 1861 Fred joined Company D, 10th regiment, Missouri Infantry. He filed for invalid pension on 8 Apr 1863.

Sometime after Fred married Susannah, she shipped off all but 1 of the children born to Aseneth. Phebe went with to live with Aseneth's sister, Martha and her husband, Thomas Matheny; Eliza went to Joe Bates & his wife; Nancy & George went to Aseneth's sister, Julia and her husband, Jacob Douglas; Thomas went to Aseneth's parents, Nathan & Jemima Wickham and Emma stayed with Fred and Susannah.

Before 1860, Fred packed up his family and moved to Fountain Greene, Hancock Co., IL where they lived a number of years. Just after 1870, they moved to Rock Bluff, Cass Co., NE but was only there briefly before moving and settling in Glenwood, Mills Co., Iowa.
