George Washington Ball Sr was the son of James Samuel Ball Jr and Nancy Green. He was one of 7 children. He was born 10 Aug 1852 in Hopkins County, Texas. He was the first Ball child born in Texas. James, his father, decided to leave Kentucky just after the birth of his daughter Elizabeth in 1851 and go to Texas. It had become too crowded in Kentucky and there was "free land" in Texas for him and his sons. All of his sons initially made the move. Some of his older daughters decided to stay in Kentucky. At least one son, returned to Kentucky.
By 1860, James had made his way to Wise County and he is farming, There are several other members of the Ball clan that made the journey that live in the area. James and Nancy have 6 children by this time.
This is a time period when the new settlers were defending the "free land" from the Native Americans that were there. By 1873, George was a member of the Texas Rangers.
On the 23 Sep 1876, George married Mary Elizabeth Alexander. She was called Bettie most of her life. Bettie was from Tennessee. Her parents moved to Texas after the Civil War., They settled in the Dallas, Texas area. George and Bettie lived in Wise County and by 1880 he is a stock raiser and they have two children: George Washington Ball Jr or Wash as he was called, and Ida Belle. George and Bettie have 10 acres that they till and 60 acres of woodland on which they raise cows and other farm animals.
In 1895, George and Bettie still live in Wise County and have a foreman that works from them by the name of Bob Miller. He has a daughter name Rosie Miller. Wash, age 17 and Rosie decide to run away and get married on her 14th birthday. They go up to Montague County, which is close to the Oklahoma Texas border and get married. That is where they decide to settle.
It is unclear why, but George and Bettie decide to sell out in Wise County and move to Montague County as well. The Millers also make the move. By 1900 George has bought land in Montague County and is farming. They are pretty close to Wash and Rosie.
By 1910, George and Bettie have been married 32 years and had 9 children, of which 6 are still living. Three, Debbie, Lillie and Birdie still live with them and help on the farm.
In 1917, George and Bettie file for a Civil War Pension for the time that George served in the Texas Rangers. It was approved. Unfortunately George would died in Bowie, Montague County, Texas on the 15 Dec 1918. He was buried in the Selma Cemetery. Bettie continued to live there until she passed in 1927.
