On May 29, 2010 Charlie passed away peacefully at his home in Roseville, Calif., at the age of 81.
Born in Lancaster, Ill., on January 22, 1929, he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years Rosemarie; his parents, Herman and Dona; brothers Bernard, William and Jay; sisters Imogene (Clark) and Jacqueline Beal. He is survived by his children Debra (Ron) Sundberg, Barbara (Scott) Tillery, David (Lori) Beal, Carol (Rich) Quinley, Dan (Amy) Beal, 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, sisters Leona (Larry) Jones, Katherine (William) Carroll, Linda (Bill) Bagwell and many nieces and nephews. His loving family will greatly miss his kind heart and sense of humor.
After growing up on a farm in Mt. Carmel and graduating from high school in Lancaster, Ill., he was drafted into the Army and served four years in Korea. He was a decorated soldier who earned a Purple Heart for wounds suffered in battle. During the war he started corresponding with a lovely young woman who stole his heart. Two days after he was honorably discharged from service, he and Rosemarie were married in Carson City, Nev. They raised thier family in Roseville, Calif., where he also worked as a Switchman for the Southern Pacific railroad. He retired from the railroad after 38 years of service. He served his community by being a volunteer firefighter for the Dry Creek Fire Department. His hobbies included spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, playing cards and golfing, where he had six holes-in-one. However, his greatest pleasure came from in his words "tormenting my grandkids."
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 13, 2010 at the Maidu Community Center in Roseville, CA. 1550 Maidu Dr. Roseville, CA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Charlie's name be made to the City of Roseville Senior program, 1550 Maidu Drive, Roseville, CA 95661 where he played pinochle every week with his group "Charlie's Angels."
A Private Interment will be held at Roseville District Cemetery. Arrangements provided by Cochrane's Chapel of the Roses.
