J. GURNON BARTON, 74, Blue Ridge Summit, died at 11:40 a.m. Thursday at his home. He had been ill since December 20 and was critically ill for the past two weeks.
He was born in Detour, Md., the son of the late John T. and Effie Burhman Barton. His early life was spent at Fountaindale. Following his marriage he resided in Blue Ridge Summit. He was a carpenter by trade and for 30 years was employed by the Hess Planing Mill. Following his retirement eight years ago he worked part-time for Omar Keckler, contractor.
He was a member of the Hawley Memorial Presbyterian Church and served on the board of trustees and was a member of the Men's Bible Class. He also was a member of the Blue Ridge Fire Department and served on the Washington Twp. School Board.
He is survived by his widow, Leile M. Masters Barton, and two sons, Lester M., and John E., both of Wayne Heights; six grandchildren, and a brother, H. Gross Barton, Pittsburgh.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Grove Funeral Home, Waynesboro; conducted by the Rev. Bruce McDonald and the Rev. J. Boyd Davis. Burial will be made in Germantown Bethel Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday evening from 7 to 9 o'clock.
