Walter was married to to Lois O'Briant Cornelius in 1949, they divorced and she preceded him in death. He married Wanda Dickey Cornelius in 1983 and she also preceded him in death. Mr. Cornelius was a veteran of World War II, serving as a bombardier in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theater. He received several medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a graduate of Hannibal High School, Hannibal-LaGrange College and the Kansas City College of Pharmacy, now UMKC. After completing pharmacy school in 1951, he returned to Hannibal where he eventually owned and operated Cornelius Pharmacy. He completed his pharmacy career as a clinical pharmacist at the Nevada State Hospital in Nevada and returned to Hannibal after he retired. He was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church and the church choir.
