Laurence Albert Baker was born August 24, 1925, in Anacortes, Washington; the middle child to John Sherman and Helen Ruth (Dilley) Baker. They lived in Washington for a short time before moving to the Villisca area where he attended Villisca High School. He joined the United States Army Air Forces in 1943. He served his country for almost 3 years as a pilot and was honorably discharged in 1946. Upon his return from the service, Larry completed his education and also attended a two years of college. He was also with the Air Force Reserves in Omaha and the National Guard in Villisca. Larry gave flying lessons while living in Ida Grove for a short time, but then returned to the Villisca area where he began his career as a farmer.
Larry married Dorothy Pettengill in 1946. Three children were born to this union: Rebecca, John and Craige. Dorothy passed away in 1985. On March 7, 1990, Larry was united in marriage to Charlotte Ruth Crouse, in Cottonwood, Arizona. Together with their children they made a family of eight.
Larry loved planes and enjoyed recreational flying. He took his last flight in the pilot seat at the age of 70. He also enjoyed golfing as well as hunting. Larry was a member of the Villisca American Legion for 66 years. He also was a scout leader and a member of the Villisca Methodist Church.
Larry passed away at the age of 89 on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at the Villisca Good Samaritan Society. He is preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Dorothy; brother, John Llewellyn Baker; grandson, Brian Baker; and brothers-in-law: Art Anderson and Don Bryson.
Surviving Larry are his wife Charlotte of their home in Stanton; children: Rebecca Parkhurst of Lincoln, NE, John Baker and wife Cheri of Villisca and Craige Baker and wife Kathy of Palmer, Alaska; step children: Christy Paulley and husband Joe of Bloomington, IN, Teresa Beggs and husband Mike of Seattle, WA and Ray Kingery and wife Becky of Creston, Iowa;12 grand children; 24 great grandchildren; sister Gwendolyn Anderson of Bend, OR; sister-in-law Betty Bryson of Clarinda; along with an extended family of nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services for Larry will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 1, 2014 at Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca. Burial will follow the service in the Arlington Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for one hour prior to the service. Memorials are suggested the family for later designation.
