Charles Vahn Hanes was born in Erie County, Pennsylvania, May 21, 1830, moving to Ohio when one year old. He remained there until he was twenty-one years of age. He then decided to move to Indiana, coming to Plymouth, 2 Oct 1853. He lived in Plymouth until 30 Mar 1855. He was united in marriage to Miss Pelena Ervin, to which union was born 6 children, 1 dying in infancy. The other five lived to be grown. Of these, their son, Charley H. passed away 4 Jul 1919 at the age of 58 years, 7 months, and 13 days.

Mr. Hanes [Charles V] had an attack of nervous breakdown of which he never recovered and passed away at 5:00 am, July 17, 1920 at the age of 90 years, 1 month, 26 days. There remain to mourn his departure the following children: Hannah Hershberger of Plymouth, Indian; Bettie M. Sheets of Morris, Illinois; Jas S. Hanes of St. Joseph, Missouri; Alma Johnson of Conneaut, Ohio. On 10 May 1920, he united with the Brethren Church and passed away in the full faith in the Lord. Funeral was conducted by Rev. Hostettler at the Walnut church, southeast of Argos on Monday, July 19 at 2;00 pm with burial in the cemetery nearby.
