Abner grew up in Greenfield, Wisconsin. He was a blacksmith and a farmer as well as a writer of poetry and a natural artist.
At age 23, on 30 Dec 1869, he married Cordelia Rebecca Tenney (b. 1848). They had two sons, Arthur Dean (b. 1871) and Frank Tenney (who became a famous painter) (b. 1874) before moving to Pottawattamie County, Iowa in the late 1870's. Their daugther Cordelia Elizabeth was born in 1882 there.
Mrs. Cordelia Johnson died at age 37 in May 1886.
Abner married Mary Frances Louisa Tenney (b. 1857), the sister of Cordelia, on 29 Dec 1887.
The family moved back to Greenfield, Wisconsin in 1889 where Mr. and Mrs. Johnson lived for the remainder of their lives. He was a beloved community character. Abner Johnson died at age 90 in 1936. He was pre-deceased by his daughter and grandson (1925). Mrs. Johnson died in 1945 at age 87.
Abner was survived by his second wife, his two sons, 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
