Erastus was the son of Jonathan and Bathesheba (Woodward) Burt. In 1817 Erastus settled for a brief time in Ontario Co., New York to teach school. He married Miss Elizabeth Hall there on August 5, 1818. The couple moved back to Erastus' home town in Vermont afterward where their first four children were born. By 1828, the had returned to Ontario Co but were again on the move by 1832 to Newark in Wayne Co. The last four of the Burt's children were born in New York. Later Erastus and Elizabeth went a little west to Monroe Co., and by 1841 they settled for good a bit farther west in Kendall, Orleans County.
