Robert Field was a son of William Brooks Field (12 May 1844-22 Jan. 1903) and his wife Medora Cotten (8 April 1846-19 Oct. 1919). His paternal grandparents were Robert Field and his wife Charlotte Brooks of Anchorage Plantation, Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi; and his maternal grandparents were John Alexander Cotten and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Sorsby of Hines County, Miss.

Robert married Mary Frances Abrams (4 Nov. 1870-5 Oct. 1957) c. 1891. She was a daughter of John Washington Abrams (3 April 1830-23 March 1910) and his wife Mary Little Abernathy (15 March 1829-12 Aug. 1922) of Floyd County, Georgia.

Robert and Mary Frances had three children: Medora Field (18 Sept. 1892-6 June 1960, Mrs. Angus Millard Perkerson of Atlanta), Robert E. Lee Field (18 July 1895-27 Aug. 1962) and Lucille Elizabeth Field (17 Dec. 1898-6 Aug. 1985, Mrs. John Wesley Dowdle of Columbia, SC).
