The family ended up in Iowa, where Lewis married Sarah 'Sadie' Lucinda Reynolds in 1893. They had 7 children: Charles Edward, Harry Earl, Cecil Thomas, Leora Margaret, Ruth Adelaide, Floyd Allison, and Ruby Grace. There was also an infant daughter, no name.
Lewis worked various labor occupations, and then opened the first independent oil station in Ames in 1920, and operated this station on East Lincoln for a number of years.
He died at home at the age of 79 years.
