John was a career-long music educator. He taught band-instrument playing in junior high and senior high schools in Nebraska, serving for a number of years as the head of the instrumental music program for Omaha Public Schools. He was not only skilled and committed in this work, but one who was especially liked and loved by his students. He was a friendly, kind, generous-spirited person, much like his wife Pat (Kline). They had three children, John "Johnny," Jim and Jayne. He lived in Omaha most of his adult life. His funeral on April 4, 2001 was at his beloved Presbyterian Church of the Master in Omaha, where for many years he directed the congregation's orchestra. He was cremated, and his cremains were interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha.
