John William Acker, 70, 922 Eastside Highway, Waynesboro, died Sunday morning, June 10, 2001, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

He was born March 30, 1931, in Rockingham County, a son of Harold T. and Elizabeth Myers Acker.

Mr. Acker was a member of Blue Ridge Chapel Church of the Brethren. He retired Oct. 1, 1990, from the Waynesboro DuPont plant with 21 years of service. He was owner and operator of John Boy's Chicken for over 30 years, which enabled him to give generously to the community.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Acker.

Survivors include three daughters; one sister; three brothers; six grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; and his fiancée.

A service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Blue Ridge Chapel Church of the Brethren by the Revs. Earl Hammer, Bruce Noffsinger and Gary Major, with burial following at Augusta Memorial Park.

Active pallbearers will be Joshua Major, Jeremiah Major, Christopher McDaniel, Cory McDaniel, Tommy Long, Tony Edwards, Roger Ramsey and Butch Thompson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jennifer Allen, Nathan Dofflemyer, Clyde Diehl, Cecil Boggs, Pete Morris, Frank Foschini, Sammy Shiflett, Larry Ramsey, Taze McDaniel, Derek McDaniel, Rollin Eutsler, Wade Hutchinson and members of Blue Ridge Chapel Church of the Brethren.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Reynolds Funeral Service of Waynesboro and other times at the residence of his daughter, Linda Major.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Playground Equipment Fund of Blue Ridge Chapel Church of the Brethren, 19 Browns Lane, Waynesboro, Va. 22980, or a charity of your choice.
