Private Sater was the first one killed in WW I, from the Thatcher, Colorado area. He was buried in France and exhumed 2 1/2 years later. After his burial in France, his body was shipped home to his parents. Robert's mother, Hattie always felt that she did not receive the right body, as the body received did not have a mended ankle, which Robert had broken in years prior to his death.

Robert was killed from a piece of shrapnel from a gun fight in the air. The shrapnel went right thru his heart, he was killed instantly.
