Deceased Name: Melvin James Moore

Ogden -Melvin James Moore, our beloved father, grandfather, and friend, valiantly passed his test here on earth and returned home to our Heavenly Father, on Aug. 23, 2008.

He was born Jan. 17, 1922 in Ogden Utah, a son of James Lawrence Moore and Minnie May Peterson Moore.

He attended Dee and Madison Elementary schools, Central Jr. High and graduated from Ogden High School in 1940. He also graduated from LDS Seminary and attended Weber state College. Mel worked at the Salt Lake Army Air base and Hill AFB prior to service in WWII in the Army Air Corps, where he was in the American, European, African and Middle Eastern theatres of operation. He also served in the Rome-ARNO Battle and Campaign.

After returning home from the war he returned to work at HAFB, where he worked in the Directorate of Material Management Landing Gear Division, and retired after 40 years of government service.

He met his wife, VaLoye Nordquist at Hill Field and they were married on June 4, 1947 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Mel was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He and his wife served as dance directors in the 22nd Ward, and Weber Stake MIA. He was a High Priest in the Rushton Heights Ward, serving in many callings such as Sunday School teacher for ten years, counselor in the bishopric, Stake High Council, membership, and finance clerk. He also enjoyed his calling as Bee Keeper for the Ogden Stake Honey Welfare Assignment.

Melvin enjoyed many hobbies and was talented in stain glass art, making many beautiful lamps and windows.

Throughout his life he enjoyed photography, gardening and coral reef/tropical fish aquariums. But of all his hobbies and interests, his favorite and most rewarding was working with his much loved German Shepherds, Bruno and Missy. He loved training these dogs in obedience competition, and showing them in dog shows. He was a former member of the Golden Spike Dog Obedience Club, and Therapy Dogs, going to many schools and nursing homes throughout the area. In his later years, his Border Collie Bandit was his best friend and companion. Mel had a tender spot in his heart for all animals, especially dogs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Fern and Elvina, one brother Stanley of Dallas, Texas, and his wife VaLoye. He is survived by one daughter, Marilee Poorman, son in law, Kent Poorman, a son, Corey Moore, and three grandchildren Ashley, Curtis, and Cady Poorman. Also, not to be forgotten is his loyal dog Bandit, who he loved with all his heart.

We would like to thank Kristy Thurnwald, his CNA, who took such wonderful care of Mr. Melvin during his last two years, and also Rocky Mountain Hospice for their caring support over the past several weeks.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Myers Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd., Ogden. Friends and family may call on Wednesday, August, 27th from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 10 to 10:45 a.m.
